Basic
Network Design Topology :
Topology refers to the geometric arrangement of devices on a
network. Local Area Networks (LANs) appear in one of three topologies:
linear, ring, or star. Larger networks can be a combination
of two or more of these.

Design Symbols : Network diagrams can contain both
generic and vendor specific devices. There are too many devices
to illustrate here, but some of the basic shapes are represented
below.
Cloud shape - used to represent segments
of the network or internet where details are not important
Work stations, clients, or nodes
Servers
Mainframes
Connection devices: hubs, routers, switches,
gateways, and bridges
